Reference Soils

Reference Soil Summary Analysis Sheets

(Developed by ASTM and the AASHTO Materials Reference Laboratory, and distributed exclusively by Durham Geo Slope Indicator)

Four homogeneous Reference Soils intended for used by the geotechnical and environmental industries for quality control testing purposes. They have known physical property values and a range of acceptable ASMT test results for 6 commonly used ASTM Physical Property Soil Test

Benefits:

Reference Soils are intended to be used by the geotechnical and environmental industries for quality control testing purposes.

With the Reference Soils, you can...

  • perform the ASTM tests, compare your result(s) with the known property values of the soils, see if your data falls within the range of acceptable test
  • results to document your testing capabilities.
  • monitor technician, equipment and overall laboratory performance on a routine basis.
  • facilitate and validate laboratory quality control programs that should impact customer satisfaction and the volume of future contract work.
  • train new lab technicians and/or to evaluate both field and onsite laboratories.
  • document” your testing capabilities.
  • pre-qualify contract testing laboratories in the competitive bidding process.
  • improve or refine existing methodology or benchmark new procedures under development.
  • have an aid in teaching soils course work.
  • conduct other research when a homogeneous, well-characterized soil sample is needed.

Product Information

Reference Soils are available in five-gallon color-coded sealed buckets representing a wide range of soil types encountered in the geotechnical and environmental industries. Each Reference Soil is a homogeneous, stable material with known physical property values that were determined by an extensive interlaboratory test program using ASTM Standard Test Methods and Test Protocols.

Each, bucket complies with ASTM F1615 and is supplied with a Material Safety Data Summary Sheet (MSDS). The average bucket weighs between 60 and 70 lb.
